Bring the button back!

Last week I stumbled across a new iPhone accessory from the clever people at Beep Industries. They’ve designed an attachment that adds a camera button and grip like you used to have on pre-digital-revolution cameras making it easier to snap the perfect picture on your iPhone.

Within seconds of looking on the Red Pop website I decided I needed to get one and was then introduced to the world of Kickstarter. Kickstarter is a website that invites people to back new ideas and ventures by pledging an amount of money. This is fantastic way of reducing the burden of risk associated with bringing new products and ideas to market by testing potential uptake before committing to manufacturing expenses.

Each project has a target amount of money and a time-frame in which to raise it. Red Pop was only a day or so into its campaign and had already reached half the target backing – pretty amazing! I backed it with a pledge that guarantees me one of the first Red Pops to be manufactured and a couple of hours later the target was met only 2 days into the process!

Clear proof of a fantastic idea – proven using the power of the web and social media.

iPad v2. The Dilemma.

iPad v2. The Dilemma.

Those of you who know us well wouldn’t be out of place to call us ‘Apple Geeks’. From phones to laptops to desktop computers to mp3 players, you may well think we are sponsored by Apple. We even have a shelf dedicated to our old Apple products so we can marvel in their former glory. (Sad…. yes we are!)

However when it came to the iPad I wasn’t convinced. I won’t go into details, but basically I didn’t think it would take off (2 million sold in less than 60 days…. good one!).

We’ve now convinced each other to buy, not one, but two iPads and just as we are ready to commit, the rumours start to appear of an iPad 2 coming out.

Our dilemma begins!

It’s typical of buying apple products, if you don’t buy early (in it’s release), there is always the worry when you do commit, a week later a newer, shinier, slicker model gets launched in true Apple style. It’s happened a few times.

So what will the iPad2 have to offer?

The rumours go, a carbon fibre back panel will replace the current titanium back to make it lighter and easier to hold for longer periods.

The iPad 2 display could have double the resolution of the original -up to 2048 x 1536. This rumour has been dismissed by a lot of people as Apple would need to upgrade the processor chip, which according to some reports they have done and apparently it has 4 times the capability of the current iPad.

Other changes will potentially include the addition of an SD card slot for putting videos and music on the device, however there has been no reports that a USB slot will feature. Front and back facing cameras, as seen in the iPhone 4 are also expected.

All this is music to our ears but what we need to know is when will it be released!? Do we just bite the bullet, get the iPad v1 and enjoy it right now or do we hold out for the newer model only for Apple to keep us waiting?

Well with Apple’s notoriously secretive nature, we won’t know until they decide to let us. And with rumours stating it could be as early as April, we’ll just have to wait a couple more months…. hopefully!
